I know, I know all the comments are going to say something along the lines that the Tissot PRX 80 has been out for a while now, and it's been reviewed to death or that this watch is over hyped. Though I would agree with the first two points I highly disagree with the last one. Saying that, I still would like to put in my two cents. As an independent watch reviewer, I have to pick and choose what watch to purchase in order to review. It comes down to a few things when I try and decide what to pick. The first being, do I like the watch? After all, I will have to wear it. So I usually wait for the watch to go through some real world testing before I commit to get the watch. It helps me decide if I truly want the watch, or if I just want a shiny new something to distract my collector's itch. It also helps that by the time I'm ready to commit to the piece, usually the price drops a bit. So I've been wearing the watch for a while now and it has quickly become one of my favorites. I will evaluate the watch with the following topics, versatility, comfort, size on the wrist and certain features that spoke to me.
First off I want to say that this watch is versatile as all hell. I wore it to the office, even though my office is very casual, it fits in in every environment. Having worn it on the wrist for over a month straight, I found it really difficult to swap it out for another watch. I was able to wear it with a suit and tie or jeans and a t-shirt. Whenever I was wearing the PRX I couldn’t help but think or compare it with my Rolex. The case is very similar to the oyster case, but a little more angular on the sides of the case. The look isn’t the only thing that reminds me of the oyster case. The way it feels on the wrist really reminds me of it as well. But then when I look at the dial and the integrated bracelet I think of the Royal Oak. The PRX is what would happen if Rolex and AP got together and had a baby.
The bracelet is super comfortable, it didn’t pinch at all and the articulation was perfect. The taper on the bracelet is slight enough, and the polished spots on the inside of each link captures the light and draws the eye in to follow it as you rotate your wrist. However, what I do think would help with sizing for more wrists is to have a few half links. Half links would help especially for those people that are in a spot where taking a link out would make the watch too tight, and leaving it in makes it a bit too loose. Another thing is changing the bracelet for a leather strap, the process was rather difficult. Even though the bracelet and the strap have a quick deployment feature on the spring bars, I found it very difficult to swap it out without a tool. Checking on the internet it seems as though some users had tweezers included when they bought the watch, and others did not. I ended up ordering the leather band, and it did not come with the tool. Having consistency when sending out the tool would be something that Tissot can improve on. Lastly, I would also love to see a rubber option to make the watch look a bit more sporty. I am sure Tissot is on it, but I hope it will be available soon.
With the integrated bracelet, the size on the wrist might make it wear a bit bigger than it actually is, but it is manageable. I recommend that you go to a store and try it on if possible. But what I love about the watch is the thickness of the case. It comes in at 10.9 mm and this makes it slip under le cuff more comfortably.
Some other features to take note of are the water-resistance, the movement, the crystal and the dial. The water-resistance comes in at 10 bar (100m or 330 ft). That is great for a watch with a non screw down crown and a see-through caseback. The Powermatic 80.11 movement comes with an 80 hour power reserve, and the crystal is a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with an antireflective coating. Last but not least is the dial. It is super difficult to describe how the light plays off of the dial, but I’ll try. Along with the waffle pattern, there is a sunburst effect that will make the dial go from a light metallic blue to the darkest of blues that can seem black in certain light. Words, pictures, and videos don’t do it justice. You will need to look at it in person to fully appreciate the dial.
So with all of that I highly recommend this watch. Do not sleep on it. I would also recommend getting it on the metal bracelet. Even though I had the leather strap I quickly went back to the bracelet for the reasons I mentioned above. At the end of the day it is a great watch that punches way above its class.
